It’s a piece that highlights the chaos and struggle the surviving passengers endured, which could be read as a metaphor for how JAY narrowly avoided ruining his marriage to Beyoncé when he repeatedly stepped out on her. In a number of shots, JAY is seen standing in front of The Raft of Medusa, which captures the horrific spectacle of the Méduse, a shipwreck that resulted in just 15 people of the 147 set adrift surviving. Coming from a dominant artist like Bey whose career reflects a consistent effort to highlight the fierce black women in her art (just look at the Lemonade film, featuring everyone from Serena Williams to Michaela DePrince), this is an affirmation of the power and beauty of black people, and black women in particular.įor an album that many view as the third installation- and musical conclusion-of JAY and Bey’s relationship saga (following Beyoncé’s 2016 opus Lemonade and JAY-Z’s side of the story in 2017’s 4:44), there are a number of instances where the art featured seems to directly speak to what The Carters have been through together. Her intervention forces her husband, Romulus, to think twice before striking her father with a spear and marked "a recognition of the power of women as peacemakers." These images are juxtaposed with images of Bey’s dancers, empowered black women of all shades, be it on a staircase in the Louvre or alongside Bey in front of the aforementioned Coronation of Napoleon. This particular piece illustrates a Roman story about a woman, Hersilia, intervening during a battle between her husband and her father. One of the most evocative works to appear in the “Apeshit” visual is Jacque-Louis David’s 1799 painting, The Intervention of the Sabine Women, which is shown a number of times throughout the video. But considering Bey’s ancestry, it feels like a deeper statement about how Beyoncé has turned the pain of colonialism on its head, standing defiant. Bey renting out the Louvre for a video and stunting head to toe in Burberry in front of many famous works of art could be seen as Bey getting her Josephine on.Īgain, at face value, it could just be a slick reference intended for art history nerds. Twitter user Queen Curly Fry points out the depth of this moment’s significance: Napoleon’s wife Josephine was crowned an empress while rocking expensive clothes during the coronation. In the video, Beyoncé appears with her dancers in front of Jacques Louis David’s The Coronation of Napoleon-which features Napoleon crowning Josephine-while singing about her “expensive fabrics”. Beyoncé’s French-Creole ancestry (on her mother’s side) give her ties to the slave trade and Napoleon III, who colonized Europe, North Africa, and other areas during his reign from 1852 to 1870. The Neoclassical pieces featured in the “Apeshit” visuals appear for a potent purpose. Rest assured, nothing The Carters do is by accident. When you dig deeper into how Bey and JAY incorporated the Louvre’s famed work in “Apeshit,” there is plenty of powerful symbolism to unpack. ![]() On sight, filming a video in such a famous venue is the ultimate flex-which one of your faves not named JAY-Z or Beyoncé could ever pull this off? The museum is home to some of the world's most famous works of art, including the Mona Lisa and Virgin and Child with St Anne. How did the “Apeshit” video end up getting shot in the Louvre, though? A spokesperson for The Louvre told Vulture that The Carters presented a concept that “showed a real attachment to the museum and its beloved artworks” in May of 2018.Įven if you aren’t an art historian, you’ve probably heard of the Louvre It’s the largest art museum in the world, bringing in over 8.1 million visitors in 2017 alone. JAY and Bey’s appreciation for art-evidenced by the pair dropping $4.5 million on a Basquiat piece ( Mecca, 1982) back in 2013-has even rubbed off on their daughter, Blue Ivy, who purchased a piece by Tiffanie Anderson for nearly $20,000. ![]() In fact, NFC is an evolution of RFID that offers more advanced features and better security, but the two technologies still share a lot of things in common. The technology behind NFC is very similar to radio-frequency identification (RFID) commonly used in the security cards and keychain fobs that you likely already use to get into your office or gym. Here are some common techniques used: Image pre-processing: The input image is standardized by cropping to the eye region, converting to grayscale, and adjusting brightness/contrast. NFC, which is short for near-field communication, is a technology that allows devices like phones and smartwatches to exchange small bits of data with other devices and read NFC-equipped cards over relatively short distances. Eye color detector apps rely on image processing and machine learning algorithms to analyze pixel color in photos of eyes. However, NFC can do a lot more than just handle mobile payments. If you've ever used Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay, then you've already taken advantage of the NFC feature on your phone. Like many features of your smartphone, it quietly sits in the background until it's needed, but it can also be used to unlock a wide range of cool features that can make your life easier. Don’t worry, though, as the NFC chip in your phone is a passive scanner that does nothing until you hold it within a couple of inches of another NFC device or tag. Whether you realize it or not, your phone's NFC scanner is likely active right now. Nearly all of today’s smartphones and smartwatches are equipped with NFC technology. I don’t plan to immerse the pack in water or other liquids, even if that does sound fun (I suppose I should find out if it floats). The lower part of the warnings is the fun part - let’s see what “suggestions” I’m about to ignore. Obvious, but this is required labeling on lithium batteries. There’s a 3 year warranty (which is pretty solid for a tool pack, especially if you use it regularly), a warning that I should read this list of warnings that seems to be the instruction manual (which I have, and will proceed to ignore), and a label in the top right stating that this is a lithium ion battery and that if the package is damaged, you shouldn’t transport it. The top part of the warnings is not terribly fun to read. Oooh! The back of the packaging comes with a handy list of “Things I’m about to do with a battery pack” - though I may not do all of them immediately. If you’re doing a lot of overhead work, the extra half pound might matter to you - but otherwise? This is a very nice improvement. But, I’m going to pull it apart enough to find out what makes it tick, compare it to the other pack I ripped apart, and do an awful lot of testing to find out if it’s any good! Specifications & Size (vs 3.0Ah Tool Pack) Since this is a brand new and working pack, I’m not going to completely destroy it - I do like my tool packs for my tools. This new pack is supposed to be twice the capacity at 6.0Ah - or, as the front cover helpfully explains, “50% More Capacity vs DCB204 4.0Ah Battery.” Math! Back in 2016, I tore apart a 3.0Ah pack I had laying around - that particular one had a bad cell group (dead short in a cell - that must have been exciting when it failed), so it was quite unusable and I couldn’t really get much data on it.
